The Misfit Conference is a gathering of all people who identify themselves as misfits, those who are uncomfortable with their surroundings and who are disturbingly different from others.  This conference is a meeting place for all leaders, to help affirm and discover their calling.

At Northway Church, Child Dedication is more than an event; it is the beginning of a partnership that is designed to influence a child to find and follow Jesus.

Child dedication is an opportunity for parents of children 4 years and younger to make a public commitment before God, your church, and your family to raise their child according to God’s ways.

As a parent, you have the greatest influence in your child’s spiritual upbringing, teaching your child what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus.  We are so excited to come alongside you as you begin this parenting adventure.

FAQs

What should I expect?

On the day of the dedication parents will be asked to arrive 40 minutes prior to the service to be checked in at the Child Dedication Kiosk.  Parents will then pre-check their children in at Kidzway and meet with a volunteer at Northway Church to go over the service.  During the service parents will sit in reserved seating with their family.  Parents will then be escorted to the stage to be prayed over by our Pastor for the child dedication portion of the service.

Does Northway Church baptize infants?

In the bible, we find parents bringing their children to Jesus.  He held them, prayed for them, and told us to welcome them.  But He did not baptize them and He did not tell anyone else to baptize them.  Northway Church believes baptism is for those who have made a personal decision to trust Christ alone for their salvation once they have the maturity and ability to understand what that means.

Do Godparents participate in the Child Dedication service?

At Northway Church we do not have Godparents participate in the service, however we invite friends and family members committed to supporting the parents to sit in the reserved seating with the family.

Can a single parent participate in a Child Dedication service?

Yes!  Child dedication signifies the commitment of parents (including single parents) to do their best to raise their child to be a follower of Christ.  Additionally, we highly encourage single parents to dedicate their child as they commit themselves to raise him or her without the presence or partnership of a spouse.

What is the age limit for child dedication?

At Northway Church we ask that your child be under the age of 4.  If you have any questions about the age limit, please call the church office at 518-899-1200.

Eileen and I want to thank you for the inspiration and enjoyment we get each week from attending Northway. It’s been almost three years since we were invited to attend church by Rich and Deb Straight, and Lois, and we have enjoyed every minute. I’ve been on the host team since the summer of 2011, and joined the Security Team in October, serving mostly on Wednesday nights. Eileen and I always enjoy participating in the Luminate project along with our three children, as well as special events such as collecting blankets for Hurricane Sandy victims. Hopefully, a trip to Haiti is in our future also.

For you to truly understand what Northway and your guidance means to us, it’s important to know our backgrounds- where we were before coming to Northway. Eileen and her family regularly attend, and were active in a Catholic church in Schenectady. I grew up in a Jewish home, was Bar Mitzvahed at 13, and was one of a small group of teenagers who led Saturday morning services. Quite a few people thought I would become a rabbi! When Eileen and I were married almost 30 years ago, a Justice of the Peace performed the ceremony. Eileen was disenchanted with the Catholic Church, and while growing up, I had simply “gone through the motions” I my religion – celebrating holidays, and going to Hebrew and Sunday school when forced.

Over the years, both of us wanted something more – a relationship with God, I suppose. We celebrated Christmas and Hanukkah with our children, as well as a few other holidays, but knew something was missing. Finding a “church” or a place of worship that was comfortable for both of us wasn’t easy. I even found myself trying to compare churches and religions online. When Rich and Deb asked us to join them, Eileen and I agreed, with low expectations. I remember us sharing that if it wasn’t for us, we would only “waste” an hour or so. When we arrived, in addition to experiencing the service, I remember looking around at all of the faces, especially the kids and young adults. I wanted to see if they were there of their own choosing, or is they had that “forced look”. I saw that kids looked happy to be there, teenagers looked engaged, and adults of all ages seemed to be at Northway because it was their choice. Amazing! Our search for a religious “community” to belong to, one in which we were comfortable participating in (I have to admit that any conversation involving Jesus had usually ended any involvement for me) and discussing God both in and out of church ended that day. Eileen loves being a part of Northway, as do I, but in many ways, I remain a “work in progress” when it comes to God, Jesus, and Christianity. I suppose I’m still sorting out all of these ideas and concepts, and trying to figure what part they play in my life. I look around during services wondering if that “light” will go on all of a sudden and God will speak to me. I guess we’ll see.

In the meantime, we wanted you to know how much Northway has changed our lives. Little things, such as driving with more patience or reducing our swearing, and big things, like humility, being less selfish, moving on from past events – I remember your stories and messages. I often wonder if you realize how effective you are when you’re preaching – after all, maybe it’s a northeast thing, but there aren’t a lot of “hallelujahs” shouted out. We are listening though, and learning, and thinking. Eileen and I sing the songs after church and during the week, and your ability to blend humor, the bible, and personal experiences when speaking keep us smiling and participating. I have to say I think it’s hysterical when you say “freaking”, and then follow up with “Yeah, I said freaking”, and I don’t even know what some of your expressions mean (it’s a chains off world?), but I find Northway to be the most welcoming and accepting place of worship I can imagine. Your ability to communicate messages of faith with warmth and compassion, each of us in the audience feeling like you are speaking with us personally, is what makes Northway what it is. I don’t know what the future holds for us – baptism weekend always leads to more serious discussions between us – but I do know that Eileen and I will continue to be a part of Northway, and we truly thank you for your leadership and guidance.
